The Wild Side of Grief & Loss
A Ritual-Informed Grief and Loss Retreat for Women
Grief is a natural expression of love. Yet in modern life, grief is often rushed, privatized, or left unspoken. Many women carry loss quietly while continuing to meet the demands of work, family, and daily responsibilities.
Some losses change the course of a life. Others live quietly beneath the surface for years.
The Grief and Loss Retreat at 4Winds offers a compassionate space for women navigating the wild side of grief, loss, and profound life transitions.
Held on the private 4Winds campus in the Colorado Rockies, this retreat invites women to step outside of daily life and explore grief within a supportive, trauma-informed environment where loss can be acknowledged, witnessed, and integrated.
Understanding the Many Forms of Grief
Grief does not only follow the death of a loved one.
Women often carry grief connected to many kinds of life experiences, including:
- the loss of a partner, family member, or friend
- the end of a relationship or marriage
- identity shifts related to career or life stage
- illness or medical trauma
- unspoken family history or generational loss
- life transitions that reshape the direction of one’s path
Because grief unfolds over time, many women move through these experiences without ever having the space to fully process them.
This retreat creates a container where grief can be approached with care, patience, and support.
Grief in Community and Ritual
Across many cultures, grief has historically been honored through ritual, storytelling, song, and communal witnessing.
Modern life often removes these containers, leaving many people to carry grief quietly and alone.
At 4Winds, we reintroduce the power of community and ritual-informed practices to support the grieving process.
Within a supportive retreat environment, women are invited to acknowledge loss, share their experiences, and witness the stories of others who are navigating similar emotional landscapes.
This shared experience often allows grief to move from isolation toward connection.
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Grief and Loss
While grief is a natural human experience, it can also intersect with trauma and nervous system dysregulation.
The Grief and Loss Retreat at 4Winds is designed with a trauma-informed approach that supports emotional safety and nervous system regulation.
Experiences during the retreat may include:
- guided group reflection and witnessing practices
- somatic exercises supporting emotional processing
- ritual-informed experiences honoring grief and transition
- equine-assisted experiential work
- nature-based practices on the 4Winds campus
- quiet space for personal reflection
Together, these experiences create a supportive environment where women can move gently through grief while feeling held by both facilitators and the retreat cohort.
Who This Retreat Is For
The Grief and Loss Retreat may be supportive for women who are:
- navigating the death of a loved one
- experiencing a profound life transition or identity change
- carrying grief that has never fully been acknowledged
- seeking a compassionate environment to process loss
- exploring deeper emotional healing
Women who require more intensive trauma recovery or mental health care may be guided toward our trauma recovery or residential programs, depending on their needs.
The Setting: Healing on the Land
The 4Winds campus sits on 134 secluded acres in the Colorado Rockies, surrounded by mountains, open land, and quiet natural spaces.
Nature offers a powerful environment for grief work. Many women find that stepping into this landscape allows their nervous system to slow and their emotional experience to unfold more naturally.
Here, grief can be approached with both clinical integrity and spiritual depth.
