Therapies for Healing Trauma

Too many people are suffering from the symptoms of unresolved trauma, PTSD or other stress disorders. Feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness can lead to destructive behaviors that limit, debilitate and even impede our inherent need to thrive. Traditional trauma therapies often fall short, resulting in repeated and unnecessary cycles of human suffering.

At 4Winds Farm in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, we offer integrative holistic therapies that heal trauma by harnessing the interconnectedness of the body, mind and spirit. Participants benefit from experienced practitioners in a welcoming environment
on 140 acres of scenic farmland in Glenwood Springs, CO.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT, also known as talk therapy, is innately intertwined in all therapeutic practices. Cognitive functioning refers to multiple mental abilities, including learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, problem solving, decision making, and attention.

“When we feel overwhelmed by trauma, talk alone isn’t going to do very much. We have to go to the unspoken voice of our bodies: one that doesn’t use words to create experiences that contradict those of fear and helplessness. An SE therapist may begin engaging with clients in much the same way as a talk therapist: inviting them to speak about the issues or feelings that are haunting them. But rather than focus on the content of what’s upsetting them, the therapist might say, “This may seem strange to you, but bear with me. I wonder if you would be willing to identify where, in your body, you feel those difficult emotions (or conflicts), and what do they feel like physically.” "An Interview with Peter Levine

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is also a type of cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT attempts to identify and change negative thinking patterns and pushes for positive behavioral changes. DBT may be used to treat suicidal and other self-destructive behaviors.

Somatic ExperiencinG (se) therapy

Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is the body-awareness approach to trauma. It is the result of over forty years of observation, research and development by Dr. Peter Levine, PhD. Based upon the realization that human beings have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma, SE™ has touched the lives of many thousands. This trauma therapy restores self-regulation, and returns a sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness to traumatized individuals who have had these precious gifts taken away. https://traumahealing.org

Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) therapy, Polyvagal Theory

Is an intervention for the treatment of trauma and other self-regulation disorders. The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a research-based listening intervention that impacts vagus nerve functioning. The SSP was developed by Stephen Porges based on his Polyvagal Theory, after a lifetime of research on heart rhythms and the impact of hearing on heart rhythms and the development of childhood abilities. He describes how the proper working of a major sense organ, the ear, starts and maintains the body’s ability to alert or calm in the presence of others. Calm states are required for learning and development. People who benefit from the Safe and Sound Protocol experience relief from chronic internal agitation, reactivity, explosiveness, dissociation, overload in social situations and a host of related physical and psychological functioning changes. https://integratedlistening.com

Compassionate Inquiry Therapy

Compassionate Inquiry Therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on self-awareness and self-compassion. “The purpose of the Compassionate Inquiry is to drill down to the core stories people tell themselves – to get them to see what story they are telling themselves unconsciously; what those beliefs are, where they came from; and guide them to the possibility of letting go of those stories, or letting go of the hold those stories have on them … That’s what Compassionate Inquiry is.”  ~ Dr. Gabor Maté

Quantum Nervous System Therapy (QNST)

This therapy approach blends cutting-edge neuroscience with energy-based healing to restore balance to your nervous system at both a physical and energetic level. By addressing the root patterns of stress, trauma, and anxiety, this method helps you release stored tension, regulate your emotional responses, and reconnect with your body’s innate intelligence. Through a combination of somatic techniques, guided visualization, and vibrational therapies, QNST supports deep, lasting transformation—helping you move from reactivity to resilience, and from overwhelm to a grounded sense of inner calm.

brainspotting therapy

Is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with Biolateral sound, which is deep, direct, and powerful yet focused and containing. Brainspotting (BSP) was discovered in 2003 by David Grand, Ph.D.

Neurodiverse Breathwork

Our program offers a transformative approach to supporting neurodivergent individuals by using conscious breathwork to regulate the nervous system, enhance focus, and promote emotional resilience. Through guided techniques, participants learn to release stress, process sensory overwhelm, and cultivate self-awareness in a safe, inclusive environment. This practice not only empowers individuals to connect more deeply with their bodies and minds but also supports improved cognitive clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being, helping participants thrive in both personal and professional aspects of life.

Generational and Cultural Trauma therapy

Generational and cultural therapy recognizes that the patterns, traumas, and beliefs we carry are often inherited from our families, communities, and cultural histories. Healing these deep-rooted influences can unlock profound personal transformation, helping you break cycles of stress, anxiety, and limiting beliefs while reconnecting to your authentic self. Through a combination of somatic practices, culturally-informed therapy, and cutting-edge tools like epigenetic insights, we explore how experiences across generations shape our biology and behavior—and how conscious healing can shift these patterns for yourself and future generations.

Psychodrama therapy

Psychodrama therapy is an experiential form of psychotherapy that uses guided drama and role-playing to explore and resolve emotional conflicts, behavioral patterns, and interpersonal challenges. Participants act out scenes from their own lives—or imagined scenarios—allowing them to gain insight into their emotions, relationships, and unconscious motivations. Through techniques such as role reversal, mirroring, and improvisation, psychodrama fosters emotional expression, self-awareness, and problem-solving in a safe and supportive environment. By engaging both the mind and body, this therapeutic approach helps individuals process trauma, practice new behaviors, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

Equine Medicine Wheel model therapy

In the circle of life, we are all connected. The return of the horse brought change, transformation, and healing to the Native Nations. The Equine Medicine Wheel Therapy is based on the Medicine Wheel Model of Natural Horsemanship, Phillip Whiteman, Jr., a Northern Cheyenne Indian from Lame Deer, Montana. This ancient tradition and natural spiritual connection to the Horse Nation presents these culturally rich gifts in a modern, sensitive and powerful way. The concepts of ‘circular thinking’ and ‘energetic mirroring’ will expand communication skills far beyond the restrictions of ‘modern linear thinking’. This program is for those seeking a deeper spiritual connection to themselves, the earth and to all relations.

IPEC Life Coach therapy program

We integrate the iPEC Coaching methodology as a foundation for transformation—helping you move beyond limiting patterns and into empowered, conscious living. Through the lens of Energy Leadership™, we explore how your energetic state influences every thought, emotion, and decision. When combined with somatic awareness, nervous system education, and spiritual practice, these tools create lasting shifts at both the energetic and cellular level. You’ll learn to recognize your default responses to stress, reframe challenges, and consciously choose new ways of being that align with your true self. The result is a profound sense of clarity, resilience, and self-leadership—an awakening to the power that has always been within you.! This program can be added on to our 30-day program or offered separately.

Somatic Archery therapy

Somatic Archery is a powerful embodiment practice that unites focus, breath, and intention. Each session invites you to ground into your body, quiet the mind, and connect to the present moment through the ancient art of archery. As you draw the bow, you learn to center your awareness, regulate your nervous system, and align energy with purpose. The moment you release the arrow, you practice surrender—trusting the process and letting go of outcome. This mindful ritual becomes a mirror for life itself: be clear in your aim, intentional with your energy, and willing to release what no longer serves.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Acupuncture and Customized Chinese Herbs

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses for more than 2,000 years. TCM is based on a belief in yin and yang, defined as opposing energies, such as earth and heaven, winter and summer, and happiness and sadness. When yin and yang are in balance, you feel relaxed and energized. Out of balance, however, yin and yang negatively affect your health.

Chinese herbal formulas are a vital component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and are based upon over 5,000 years of clinical experience and Chinese Herbology study. The effectiveness of these customized herbal formulas is directly correlated with the practitioner’s ability to prescribe the correct combination based on the pattern of disharmony diagnosis. Unlike over-the-counter herbs, these formulas are specially mixed for each individual and are often modified as the healing process progresses.

Amino acid therapy

Amino Acid therapy is a holistic approach that uses targeted amino acids—the building blocks of proteins—to support optimal brain and body function. By addressing specific neurotransmitter imbalances, this therapy can help improve mood, reduce anxiety and stress, enhance focus, and support overall mental and physical health. Because amino acids directly influence the production of key neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, supplementation is often used to restore balance and promote emotional regulation. At our center, amino acid therapy is guided by evidence-based protocols and personalized assessments, ensuring each client receives a plan tailored to their unique biochemical and wellness needs.
